Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to the most common questions about professional teeth whitening, from how it works to safety and results.
How long does it take to see results?
Most customers notice visible whitening after just 2-3 applications. Full results of up to 8-10 shades whiter are typically achieved within 1-2 weeks of regular use. The exact timeline depends on the severity of your staining and the specific product concentration used.
Will teeth whitening cause sensitivity?
Some temporary sensitivity is normal during whitening treatment and is a sign that the whitening gel is working. Our custom-fitted mouthpieces significantly reduce sensitivity compared to strips or generic trays because they keep the gel precisely on your teeth and away from sensitive gum tissue. If you experience sensitivity, simply reduce the frequency or duration of your whitening sessions.
What types of stains can professional whitening remove?
Professional whitening is effective on genetic staining, age-related yellowing, tobacco stains, and food and drink stains from coffee, tea, wine, and berries. Tetracycline stains can also be improved significantly, though they may require a longer treatment period. Whitening works on natural teeth only and will not change the color of crowns, veneers, or fillings.
How does this compare to visiting a dentist?
Our system uses the exact same professional-strength whitening products and custom mouthpiece fabrication process that dentists use. The only difference is that you take your own impressions at home instead of having them taken at a dental office. The lab work, materials, and whitening gel are identical. Dentists typically charge $300-$500 for the same treatment we offer at $99.95.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes. Professional teeth whitening with Carbamide Peroxide has been used safely by dental professionals for decades. The American Dental Association has acknowledged that peroxide-based whitening products are effective and safe when used as directed. Our custom mouthpieces add an additional layer of safety by preventing gel from contacting gum tissue.
How long do the results last?
With proper oral hygiene, professional whitening results can last 1-3 years or longer. Results may fade more quickly if you regularly consume staining foods and beverages like coffee, tea, red wine, or berries, or if you use tobacco products. Touch-up treatments can easily restore your brightness when needed.
Who should not use teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is not recommended for children under 16, pregnant or nursing women, or individuals with gum disease, worn enamel, cavities, or exposed roots. If you have any dental restorations (crowns, veneers, fillings) in visible areas, be aware that these will not change color with whitening. Consult your dentist if you have concerns.
What is Carbamide Peroxide?
Carbamide Peroxide is the active whitening ingredient in professional teeth whitening products. When applied to teeth, it breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and urea, releasing oxygen molecules that penetrate the enamel and break apart stain compounds. Our products contain 15-22% Carbamide Peroxide, which is the standard professional concentration used by dentists.
How do I take impressions at home?
Taking impressions is simple and takes just a few minutes. Mix the impression material as directed, press it into the trays provided, insert the trays over your teeth, and bite down firmly for about two minutes. Remove the trays, let the impressions set, and mail them back in the prepaid envelope. Detailed instructions with photos are included in every kit.
What is your money back guarantee?
We offer a 100% money back guarantee. If your teeth do not whiten up to 8 shades or whiter, we will refund your purchase in full. No questions asked. We have stood behind this guarantee since 2003 because we are confident in the quality and effectiveness of our professional whitening products.
How often should I use the whitening gel?
For initial whitening, most products are used once daily for 1-2 weeks. Night formulas like Nite White are worn overnight while you sleep. Day formulas like Day White require just 30-minute sessions. After achieving your desired shade, use the gel once a month or as needed for touch-ups to maintain your results.
Can I eat and drink normally during treatment?
It is best to avoid highly staining foods and beverages for at least 30 minutes after each whitening session, as your teeth are more susceptible to staining immediately after treatment. During the overall treatment period, try to minimize consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries, and tobacco for the best results.
My teeth are sensitive. What can I do?
There are four things you can do to reduce sensitivity. First, wear the whitener for a shorter period. Second, brush your teeth with Sensodyne toothpaste, which contains a high concentration of potassium nitrate that soothes nerve endings. Third, ask your pharmacist for Gel-Kam, a high-concentration fluoride gel. Wear it in your trays for 4 minutes before and after whitening to help re-mineralize your teeth. Fourth, stop whitening for a couple of days so your teeth can adapt. Within 24 hours of stopping, the sensitivity will cease. The longer you whiten, the less sensitivity you will experience.
My gums are irritated or burning. What can I do?
Gum irritation is caused by whitening solution sitting on your gums. There are four remedies. First, after applying the gel, hold the mouthpiece in place with one hand and wipe the gel that seeps onto your gums with a tissue or Q-tip. If a lot of gel is seeping out, you are using too much. Second, trim the mouthpiece so it sits 1-2mm above the gum line. Third, apply Vaseline Intensive Care to your gums before whitening to create a barrier. Fourth, stop whitening for a couple of days to let your gums recuperate. Over time, your gums will adapt and you will experience less irritation.
What is the difference between laser whitening and custom mouthpieces?
Laser whitening is done by a dentist who applies a 35% Hydrogen Peroxide solution to your teeth and uses a light to speed up the chemical reaction. The benefit is instant results, but it costs $400 or more. The problem is that after a year of normal eating habits (coffee, tea, cola, etc.), your teeth develop new stains and you must pay $400+ again to repeat the procedure. With custom mouthpieces, you can simply wear them for a night a year later to remove new stains at no additional cost. Custom mouthpieces get your teeth just as white for much less money.
Why are my teeth whitening unevenly?
If your teeth are whiter along the edges, this is because enamel is thinner along the edges. Continue whitening and the thicker parts of the tooth will catch up. If you see white round spots, these are calcium deposits that flare up during whitening. Continue whitening until the rest of your tooth reaches your desired color, then stop. The calcium deposits will fade after a couple of weeks of not using the product.
Will whitening affect my crowns or fillings?
No. Teeth whitening will not affect fillings, crowns, or other tooth-colored restorations. The whitening gel only works on natural tooth enamel. Occasionally, amalgam fillings may leave a harmless gray residue in your tray. If you have dental work in visible areas, be aware that these restorations will not change color to match your newly whitened teeth.
Can you ship internationally?
Yes, Professional Teeth Whitening gladly ships internationally. When placing your order, select international shipping and your package will take 4 to 10 days to arrive at your doorstep.
How long does shipping and mouthpiece fabrication take?
Orders are processed and shipped the same day they are placed. Normal shipping takes 2 to 4 days to arrive. Once you mail your impressions to the lab, they fabricate your custom mouthpieces and ship them the same day they receive the impressions. There are no hidden costs and no delays.
How is this different from over-the-counter products?
Your treatment uses custom-fitted trays and professional-strength products. Over-the-counter trays are not snug and cause spotting by not distributing bleach evenly over your teeth. Some over-the-counter products also contain harmful acids or abrasives that can damage your teeth or gums. Professional products use proven Carbamide Peroxide at concentrations 2-3 times stronger than drugstore alternatives, and custom mouthpieces ensure even, complete coverage.
